Although Dreamweaver offers several methods for publishing websites of which TheMACisp supports most, we recommends the FTP method for publishing.
Our example will create a new site using the steps to define an FTP connection. Let's start by going to the pull down menu, and select Site - New Site. |
The site definition wizard will come up. Enter a name for the site you want to create, for our example we will call it mywebsite. Once the name is entered, click Next to continue. |
This page of the wizard asks you if you want to use dynamic server technology or not. for our example we will not be using dynamics so click "No, I do not want to use a server technology". Click Next to continue. |
The wizard now presents options for how you want to edit your website. We recommend the first method which is to edit on your local computer and then upload manually. Click the (recommended) radio button and then click Next to continue. |
This page is where we finally define our FTP connection: Select FTP from the pop-up menu and enter the following information:
Hostname: ftp.mywebsite.com
Folder: Sites/mywebsite.com
Username: {your username}
Password: {your password}
It is wise to click Test Connection at this point (you must be online to do this) to make sure you got everything correct, once satisfied, click Next to continue. |
The page asks you if you want check-in / check-out security enabled. If you are the only one working on this site then there is no reason to enable this feature. This only becomes important when multiple designers are working on a site at the same time and this assures that one person can not "clobber" the work of the other or visa versa.
For our example, click No... and then click Next to continue. |
This is the last page of the wizard and simply reports on all the settings that you have made so far.
If you see something that is "out of whack" click the Back button, make the necessary correction and proceed on to this page again. If everything looks good to you, click Done to finish the setup process. |
If you already have an existing site and need to point it to our servers you run the setup wizard by clicking Edit Sites... from the Site pop-up menu in your website window. Select the site and then click Edit to change the FTP settings, or any other settings for that matter. |
