Secure Socket Layer (SSL)

Secure Socket Layer (SSL) is required for e-commerce applications that transact credit card and banking information, in addition, any submission of sensitive data should be accomplished only using a Secure connection.

Before you apply for a secure certificate, email support@themacisp.net or call support at
1-800-307-0663 to have a secure key generated for your website.

Review the requirements for a secure certificate at : http://www.thawte.com. this is our recommended vendor for secure certificates. Once your secure key is generated, you can then make your application with Thawte for your secure certificate. When this certificate is issued by Thawte, your website will then be upgraded to SSL.

Once SSL is established on your website, you involk secure connections by referencing webpages using https.

Standard URL Example: http://www.mywebsite.com

Secure URL Example: https://mywebsite.com

To leave the secure state simply reference a standard URL.

It is recommended that you put a Secure Site Seal on your initial secure page where visitors can verify the authenticity of your certificate and the secure connection. This site seal is available free from the Thawte website and is actually a couple of simple javascript statements you insert into your secure webpage(s).

CAUTION!! The Thawte Site Seal malfunctions and reports incorrect information on most versions of Mac Browsers... (Safari, IE, Netscape etc). We advise not using a site seal until Thawte fixes this. The old method they used worked just fine but it's not available anymore.
